Lamp Makeover

My first lamp/spray paint project...I am so excited for you to see! Here is a teaser..you will have to go all the way to the end of the post to see the whole thing! (eek, I see I need to trim a fray in that ribbon...don't worry, I'm on it!)

These "pineapple lamps" have been following me around since college.I have been hanging onto them because I thought they were cool but finally knew I had to do something about the crooked shades and the dark color. Spray paint and ribbon provided the solution.

Process pics...

You can see I taped off the cord and the switch with Blue Painter's Tape, which unlike the walls, worked pretty well for this project.

For the shades I picked up some very basic lampshades at Target and some ribbon from Walmart.

My original plan was to use hot glue, but I tried double sided tape, and it worked, so I "stuck" with it! I ran the tape the entire length of the ribbon. I found that is I applied the tape in smaller pieces rather than in one long piece I had a better result. I lined the bottom of the shade with ribbon.

When I came to the end I made a little piece to cover the seem..I also used double sided tape for this. I started and ended my ribbon where the seam of the lampshade was.

I lined a small piece of ribbon with tape and simply folded it over on itself, then a attatched it, with more double sided tape, where the ribbon ends met...

...because my ribbon is striped I did my best to line it up with the pattern with the seam. Keep this in mind for when the lamp is on as well, as the seam of the lampshade will appear thicker then...

And here they are... all freshened up...

See my yarn balls in the background there??? Now I just need to freshen up those radiator covers...any ideas or tips anyone?

  1. Love the lamp Kate! It's amazing how just a coat of spray paint and a new shade can turn an outdated lamp into something fun and modern! I also like how the base of the lamp looks in white. It makes the pineapple texture pop a little more. Another successful project! :)
